Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) is in talks with service providers and global technology players to provide 4G data services in the country by next year. It also has plans to offer high-speed data services on attractively priced tablets--Rs 3,000 or even lesser--by early next year.
Reliance Industries which made a comeback to telecom last year, plans to offer fourth-generation or 4G-enabled data cards that can be plugged into computers and laptops, apart from providing tablets at a game-changing price of . 3,000 or even lower to hook customers, two executives familiar with the development said.
The company then plans to scale it up to a countrywide network by the middle of next year, states an ET report. The decision to introduce low-cost tablets is to entice the masses. This strategy is similar to the company's move in 2003, when it took mobile telephony to the masses with its 'Monsoon Hungama' handsets launched at Rs 501. This had helped Reliance to win 1 million customers in just 10 days.
According to the report, the company has examined prototypes of tablets from over 15 Taiwanese and Chinese manufacturers and might ultimately focus on three to four models, all of which are likely to be priced between Rs 3,000 and Rs 8,000. The entry-level versions are likely to run on Google's Android operating system, the report said.
